Lineage: Cass (mono) > CD > EAC
In March, 1978, Greg Douglass' hand lost a battle with a pane
of glass, severing several tendons and arteries. At the time, there was a
chance he would never play guitar again, but doctors were able to repair
most of the damage via microsurgery.
Greg's friends got together to hold a benefit to help with his medical
expenses, with John Cipollina acting as musical director and playing in all
three bands. Terry was joined by Byron Allred's (Steve Miller Band) only
appearance as a Pirate. Rocky included an early version of the band with
Mike Varney and Greg Anton. This was SDS' second (and last) gig and
features Nick Gravenites, Pete Sears, Jim McPherson and David Weber
(Copperhead), Jarrett Washington (Freelight) and Marcus David (Nick G).
The sets for two of the bands have never been circulated, the third (SDS)
has not been torrented. The recording is pretty good considering it was from
a mono cassette with a built in condenser microphone. The digital transfer
was made directly from the cassette master. Some EQ was used to improve the
sound. Some between song patter was edited out, this was a fault on the
original recording.

Announcer: | ... from the San Francisco airport where his 747 jet has just landed, an hour late, from Munich, Germany.
He was over there doing some prep(?) work for Ronnie Reagan.
Anyway, we've thrown some good stuff together here, we're just going to lay it on you.
Barry'll be here before the night is over.
So help us out, hang in there. I'd like to introduce this band by name, but they don't have one, so give them a big hand. |
|
It sounds like Barry arrives after Shout! |
|
BM: | Thanks, er, thanks for being so patient. I broke down on a remote part of highway 280 where there were NO telephones. I had to use hook,
crook & device to get here too.
You can turn on John's microphone, no-one will complain. |
JC: | Well, there we go. Actually Barry's trying to keep everyboy from freaking out but actually he was abducted by... |
BM: | lebanese terrorists |
JC: | flying saucer, by Reagan's old dead astrologer.
You can read all about it in the weekly world news, folks. Yeah, film at 11.
So anyway, we're gonna do this song, I know you've heard it before, maybe we can get some help on it... eventually. |

Note: I received this many moons ago in a cassette trade; low gen w/ slight hiss in the quiet parts.

John Lee Hooker is on tracks 1-8 and 13-15.
John Cipollina is on tracks 10-12 (and maybe on 15 but he doesn't take any solos)
A scan of my ticket to the show is included in the torrent.
This is definitely not the whole show. Track 1 fades in - who knows what was played before that song? Track 8 sounds like the end of the set and track 9 sounds like the beginning of the encores. At the end of track 15 there is less than a second of the beginning of another song, but what is offered here is all I captured that night.
Audience recording by Easy Ed. Crappy little Sony stereo mike that sold for under $100 placed on the roof of the bathrooms, left side of the club (facing the stage) about midway back in a club that held maybe 200-250 people > Sony D6 cassette recorder Sony UX-PRO90 cassette (Dolby B on)
Transfer by Easy Ed: Sony TC-K71 (Dolby off*) > Presonus Firepod > firewire > PC > Sound Forge 8 (24 bit, track, normalize to peak levels, change bit length, export to .wav files) > .wav files > FLAC level 8 encoding align on sector boundaries. Not burned to cdr - no EAC.
When I first pulled this tape out of my stacks and auditioned it, I wasn't going to offer it. I don't think the balance of the instruments is very good, you can't hear Hooker's voice as well as I'd like, and Cipollina's guitar is massively louder than everything else on stage when he's playing.
But I figured that hardcore Cipollina fans might like to have this until something better turns up from that night, even though Cipollina didn't really play WITH Hooker as we might like.
And, since audience recordings with crappy cheap little Sony mikes are common as dirt here on DIME and people just gobble them up (and alot of those are multigenerational copies, transferred with unspecified gear - and therefor probably just the soundcards built into their computers) so what the hell, here's another piece of crap offered up as if it were a golden nugget.
* Recording with Dolby B boosts high frequencies by 10dB. Playing back with Dolby B cuts high frequencies by 10dB. But Dolby circuits vary from machine to machine and I didn't hear any tape hiss that seemed to need reducing so I transferred this with Dolby off, which resulted in a little extra brightness to the recording, which I deemed acceptable.

NOTES: I received a copy of this a while back. It was in bad shape when I got it. I sent it to a friend to fix it up and he did a great job. This is the fixed up version. I vined it a while back to a few people in a small Grateful Dead group I belong to. I don't think it has been passed around outside that group though (I traded it to 1 or 2 people though). I thought this was a good place to vine it and get it circulated more. It's a very cool show and worth having. Here is the info from the person who fixed it up.
Editing & mastering done by The Wizard
This one exhibited classic battery death speedup. I built a speed reduction curve from -2.0%>-15.0% and this seemed to do a pretty good job. It was a bit flat so I EQ'ed to bring up the midrange and top a bit. A light continuos noise filter was used to take the edge off the tape hiss. Levels were low so the show was normalized to 0 dB. The right channel was brought up 2.8 dB to match the left. Various glitches & sector boundary errors were corrected. All editing was done with DC5 software.

- NR applied, there was a little more noise on the first 4 tracks.
- Level adjustments made
- Closed up some gaps
Comments:
This has been in circulation for many years and is always shown as having 10 tracks. However,
there aren't as many different tracks here as it would appear. I have eliminated all the gaps
and it turns out that are only 8 tracks and not 10.
If the first 4 tracks are compared with the second 4 they appear to be the same. The only differences
being that they are from different transfers and run at slightly different speeds.
For completeness I'm including all 8 tracks, none of which have been adjusted for speed.
Thanks to Ray Decosta for providing his copy which he recieved from Steve Keyser

(Later re-broadcast on Grateful Dead Hour #500, #710 [nice number!], #1107 - and others?).
Lineage: pre-FM (show #710) -> DAT (transfer: Fostex D-5 -> Tascam US-144 -> SoundForge 9.0 (edited w/Bias Peak Pro 5.2 by BRUNO '09) -> flacs -> Audacity for remastering.
2015 remaster notes: some peaks lowered & volume increased, fade fixed, slight offset adjustment, pitch/speed fixed (+.7% = A440). |
===================================
Fire On The Mountain 03/07 ("Fire On The Mountain" sessions mix & edit ~ source: 38f) Recorded 1972 (remixed '73?).
Lineage: Multi-track master studio reel -> master stereo reel -> EQ -> CD > EAC -> wav -> flacs -> Audacity for remastering.
2015 remaster notes: reel transfer too hot so levels lowered -5 & clipfix applied at 95%, offset fixed, left channel dropout at 1:06 mostly repaired, pitch/speed fixed (+2% = A440). |
===================================
Fire On The Mountain 04/08 (Jim McPherson sessions ~ source: taperchuck3) Recorded 1974. Version 2 of 3 from this source tape. Versions 1&3 shorten the intro by a beat & have only barely audible mix differences (presumably due to generation degradation). This circulating session tape has been erroneously traded as "Mickey Hart with Steve Miller" (McPherson sounds a lot like Miller).
Lineage: studio master tapes -> ? (probably only analog generation) -> mid-80s unknown generation cassette, Dolby C encoded -> 2015 digital transfer -> flacs -> Audacity for remastering.
2015 remaster notes: overall levels fixed, offset fixed, pitch/speed fixed (-1.2% = A440), dithered down to 44.1kHz from 24/96. The EQ'd version has a bit of noise reduction applied. |
===================================
Fire On The Mountain 05 (WBCN-FM Grateful Dead rarities show ~ source: J.D.) Recorded 1972 (possibly remixed '73 or '74?).
Perhaps announced as a "Mickey Hart upcoming single". A shorter edit & quite different mix than the "Area Code 415" & "Fire On The Mountain" versions.
Lineage: WBCN-FM Boston stereo radio broadcast circa '74 -> off-air master reel -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette (circa '79 reel to cassette transfer was possibly EQ'd) -> 2014 playback on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity for remastering.
2015 remaster notes: overall levels fixed, offset fixed, pitch/speed fix to A440. |

General DimeTravel remaster notes 2014/2015 ::: Versions from the same sessions were pitched individually to A440 so may differ VERY slightly. flacs -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, speed fixes as noted above with single pass per song after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, NO added equalisation except as noted] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded week of 2015-04-xx.
DimeTravel 094 ::: Thanks to 38f, BRUNO, JD, taperchuck3, ckyhim1990, hanwaker ::: Corrections welcome ::: This has been a LONG time coming. Some folks may ask why this project exists at all, but they should probably keep their heads buried in the sand as I suspect I am not the only one around who has some emotional attachment to this song of this vintage. Some of the versions needed help & some haven't really done the digital world rounds 'til now. The WBCN Fire is shortest of 3 different edit/mix versions from the same original studio session but a very different mix & a worthy addition to the puzzle. The taperchuck3 McPherson source is VERY different & much longer than the one Hart played on the GD Hour & has some trippy Schuster flute. For some decades I'd wanted to hear the versions in one place & speed corrected, with some continuity & level adjustments. Finally did it, hope you dig it. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yers truly, Knees

This set seems to be a rarity - much less circulated than the Airplane, Big Brother or QMS sets from this show.
It's a decent sounding audience recording from my 2nd gen. reel. I think that this is the best copy that you will find of this, though I would love to be proven wrong.
I got this recording from David Cooks (early tape archivist for John Cipollina), who attended the show and noted the following details during the performance. It's easy to hear the guitars and lead vocalists as listed, but the background vocals are not as easy to differentiate. So don't expect Janis or Grace to be very obvious in the mix. The jams are fairly tight despite being rather extended.
Lineage: 2nd gen. TDK AUDUA 10 inch reel recorded at 3.75 ips speed > Macintosh with Digidesign Audiomedia III sound card > Pro Tools (minor "nip and tuck" edits, normalization and tracking) > Aiff files > xACT (Flac level 8 files with sector boundaries verified).
Notes (2010)
David Cooks passed away a few years back in Grants Pass, Oregon. David certainly had a somewhat controversial career in archival circles (to put it politely) but also was a true character.

This is a true and unusual rarity, NPC with John Cipollina,
with really interesting versions of Mona, Morning Dew &
Little Feat's Fat Man in the Bathtub. Enjoy it ! - "38f"
Remaster Notes: 5/2/05 by "DynacoST70"
Raised Pitch by 1 Semitone on all tracks. The first thing I noticed upon
listening to this is the speed was very slow.
Remastered with Ozone 3: EQ and level balance (balance L to R off by 3-4db
on tracks 7-10).
There is still some NR artifacts from the previous incarnation of this
fileset.
Sector boundaries checked and fixed after pitch correction.
Thanks to the original poster for sharing this.
