Taper's Comments:
The "Lone Star Cafe" and "The Bottom Line" were my two fave venues in New York City, and about the only two where I could see a show early enough to be able to make the last train home to New Jersey. The "Lone Star" was in an old row home. Very narrow and deep. The stage was more in the front of the place, across from the bar against the wall, and in a lot of the club, the sightlines were poor. I always booked a seat early in the balcony, looking straight down on the stage. The "Lone Star" had a real relaxed atmosphere, and the staff were nice folks, at least to me.
The was the first time I saw ZERO, which was least favorite of the three different bands I saw that had John Cipollina in them. Still, they were certainly more than just decent. I thought the vocal levels could have been better, but that would be my only complaint about the sound. Unfortunately, I was only to see John one more time after this on their return trip to the "Lone Star" in late February 1987. He was a real nice guy, and could talk your arm off! If anybody can help with the set list, please post that in the comments section. Enjoy!

Comment: ?? is a slow blues number sung by Anna Rizzo

[Initial setlist from setlist.com, which only goes up to Golden Road, so maybe the last 3 tracks on disc 3 are filler. They could be by Zero, but, if so, I think it's without Cipollina. All 3 are instrumentals. #23 has a lot of sax, and rather frenetic Hopkins-style piano. #24 has a lot of pedal steel, and at the end someone says "Thanks Pete".]

This was unfortunately the last time I ever saw John Cipollina. He was a real nice guy, and could talk your arm off! For some unknown reason, the show started more than an hour late, and the first show was a bit short. I had taken a nice photo of the band from the previous ZERO show I saw at the "Lone Star" (Torrent # 276373), and went up to their dressing room on the third floor to get it autographed. Everybody was real nice, gladly autographed it, and then I headed out to Penn Station to catch the 1:30 AM train (the last one until 5:30 AM) back to New Jersey. Enjoy!

"This is part of the second and third sets of Zero at Bogie's 2/28/87 which has a great Mona; Cipollina does go off on this, as does everyone. There's a short Greensleeves tease, then a snake charmer bit, and a rippin' Bobby Vega jam during Mona. Sound quality is pretty great for an audience recording."

"Just checked setlist.com and the setlist given doesn't include Golden Road, though it's there on my copy. The comments (supplied by zappa) for this show say: 'Hadi Al-Sadoon on Trumpet without Martin who was hospitalized in NYC'."

"I don't think this is in the correct order because there is a "...a very warm Eugene welcome to Zero..." at the beginning of track 05. Also, "Baby Baby" was often used as the opening song back then. It's very likely that you did side 2 of your tape first by mistake. Track 02 sounds very familar, but I can't quite place it right now. I will edit if I figure it out."

Notes: One of the strangest tie-dye events I’ve ever been to. The show was in a church basement on the Cambridge Common attended by about 30 people. We set up our mics in the center of the floor with the band playing their hearts out. It was the last time I saw John Cipollina perform.

The Candles opened.

This was a fantastic night, with plenty of good cheer and joviality. I always loved this band, especially Cipollina, and all his many incarnations (more to come!) This was taped by my friend Pauly, while I took about a dozen photo's. Real fan boys we were... Quality is very nice indeed, with perfect meters, and hardly any crowd interference, give this one a try!!!!

"Please note the sound from this show was terrible. It is my opinion that the soundman actually had no idea how to run sound. Unfortunately this is more than obvious. This was confirmed with the soundboard we were running at the same time. However for archival purposes this is a good show so you may want to add it to your collection."

Source: SBD > DAT > MC (XL II-S) Transfer: MC > Aiwa AD-F850 > Ted's THC cables > Edirol U-5 (USB) > Wavelab 5.01a @ 24/96 Mastering: Wavelabe 5.01a (X-noise to dehiss; rebalance channels; Q-10 Paragraphic EQ to reduce the bass; L3 Multimaximzer to enhance gain; dither & resample to 16/44.1) > FLAC

This tape came labelled "Aud from D.A.T. Master" and the source says that it is a direct transfer. Mic info is unknown. A lossless DAT source does not circulate as of August 2005.

The first few seconds of audio are pretty weak, but it picks up quickly. The recording was very bass heavy, and it took a lot of EQ to balance it out. Tape flip after Do I Move You crossfaded with no music lost. The DAT tape was stopped after Tangled Hangers while technical problems were sorted out. Tough Mama opened.

Thanks for Carlisle for the cassette. Please check http://db.etree.org/shncirc/zero for a DAT transfer before downloading this one.

Note: One of these tunes in the second set is obviously not Berm, but I think one of them is! Please correct me (via email)!

Source info: Pretty much unknown. Soundboard > DAT master > CDR (method unknown) > EAC > shn

Recorded by Jon Horton.

EAC > mastering > shn > upload to archive.org/torrent by Scott Goodwin (whoisstevekimock at hotmail.com)

Mastering = CDR > EAC > Cooledit 96 Open/Append > EAC (retracking) > shn

It took me twelve years to find this recording. Four years of semi-serious searching for it. It is the show that really got my attention about this band. Is is the best Zero show ever? Likely not. Is it my favorite? Yep. It's a nice soundboard of a solid show. I actually found the taper in possession of the master after four years of blatant begging for this show. Finding it was really, really, nice.

I EACed this recording from the Master CDRs and reassmbled the entire show. Levels did not require normalization (saturated?) and may be a bit hot here and there (from the master DAT? The world may never know...). Seems CDR master was made from a standalone CDR, and remastering simply removed the chatty parts before songs and placed them at the end of songs. I.E., when you hit "track up", you get to the beginning of the next tune, not three minutes of Martin 'chutting up'.

More Notes:

This was my first Zero show. I had never even heard of this band at the time, and saw this Berkeley show in the middle of a classic six-week 'out West' tour with a friend of mine from Tennessee, after the Vegas Dead shows of 1992. We'd done five weeks on the road, living on Noodle-Roni and our wits in a tent and a Honda Sedan, seeing America. When we got to Vegas, our hosts suggested a variety of musical things to do, Primus at the Greek, Dylan at Cal Expo, "But, there's this pretty sweet band playing just down the street you guys might like..."

Lights went down, mind was blown.

Setbreak found me sitting on the curb out front, having a smoke, sitting between John Kahn (I think) and Steve Kimock. "Hey, you guys are fucking great," I offered.

"Thanks," says Steve. "You're not from here, are you?"

"Naw. I'm out here from Tennessee."

Oh, Jeeeezus!" Says Steve.

Enjoy.

Zero - November 12, 1993
"This is one of my very favorite Zero shows! There are several unique features: Martin plays soprano sax on several songs; Chance has the slow intro - for the first time, as far as I know; Martin plays sax on Chance; and the second set is well over two hours (which is why Gregg's Eggs has a hole). Raging show, and this FOB tape came out well! Check it out."

Notes: Great sound!!! Martin was in a talkative mood this night. This was an outside show on the side of a mountain and the site is about 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. What a great vibe, and as I recall the sunset that night was awesome and very late being that it was the summer solstices.

Notes: "This was an incredible, completely un-announced show that was Zero's first performance in the Southeast. They had just arrived in Florida for their first time, and apparently Judge turned into a mosquito and started biting everyone, so the band left him at the hotel and played this show without him.

The crowd was really small. If you didn't hear about this show from a friend, or be lucky enough to walk into Media Play that night, you weren't at this show.

The band had popcorn behind the make-shift stage that they offered to the small crowd. We were all dancing in this unique venue with all the lights on and people shopping around us!

There was a lot of commentary that resulted in large pauses between songs. I opted to leave the commentary out. I am sure that some folks will be upset to miss the jokes and such, but I still think that the sound and the set is fantastic and no Zero fan will be dissappointed by this download! If anyone absolutely must have the commentary, I still have the original Cassette Masters."

"I'd like to offer this very fun and memorable show as a vine if there's interest. The show consists of 2 audio cds EAC'd from Bob Cogswell's recording. This was a great concert, starting with opener Will Bernard's Motherbug, who I enjoyed very much. I've seen Motherbug before and liked them but this night they were very impressive and fun, and later on Will Bernard did a terrific job sitting in with the Zero Jam.

This wasn't the best attended show I've been to (around 75 people there?), but it was one of the best shows, musically, that I've been to in a long time. It was pouring hard that night, which probably didn't help turnout. There was some flooding in the theater from all the rain, and it took them a while to get it all cleaned up inside, so my friend and I walked up the street and had some pupusas and sopa and came back and soon some great music was happening. Maximum respect and appreciation to Morning Spring Rain productions and staff for making the show go on despite all the reversals and challenges!

The Tower is an old movie theater, turned church and occasional concert venue, with a nice balcony, golden murals on the theater walls, and religious poetry in Spanish hanging on the pink tile bathroom walls; in all, an interesting venue.

It reminded me a little of old Cipollina-era Zero shows, not crowded but the jamming loose and everyone there having a great time. Wavy Gravy was in the lobby selling Cherry Garcia peace pops for Camp Winnarainbow. Wavy postulated that eating ice cream would equalize everyone's core temperature with the chilly interior of the Tower and then there'd be no "cold", we would just "be". I attempted this thermal equalization procedure with a cold beer and it worked pretty well. There was an excellent light show during the concert, and in between sets they showed old Betty Boop cartoons, which was awesome (what, no Felix!?).

Musically, they wailed, individually and collectively, and got some great jams going. Everyone was on and flowing; there were a couple of rough edges, but overall I was impressed at how tightly and well they played together. Chip was just amazing on keyboards, Martin sounded terrific and was blowing some sweet long notes, Greg was on fire, Will Bernard blended right and took the songs to interesting new places, Judge sang strong and with feeling, Liam shredded, and Ed Ivey was a nice treat on tuba.

Thanks to Bob Cogswell for taping and sharing this great show, and many thanks to the Zero musicians for playing. Here's hoping for more Zero Jams to come in 2005."

This show was a sort of a bust out for this line-up. Futoshi's playing on this gig broke new ground for him, in my opinion. It had been a long time since I had seen him play. Not since Gregg's Egg's (roughly 2 years ago) in fact. He has been playing a blues gig since then, and his playing on EOWB shows the work. During Golden Road, Futoshi's guitar amp quit, and you can hear him just sort of fade away during a solo. The rest of the band steps up after a short delay, and Futoshi comes back to finish the song.
