From the Introduction to the February 1977 issue:
"Way back in the mid-sixties the BSFA produced the first issue of a magazine called TANGENT which was described in the advertisements as a fiction magazine for or rather featuring "top professional writers and bright newcomers". It lasted two issues and then folded. Following comments I made to Tom Jones it was suggested that the magazine be resurrected with myself as editor. This suggestion was put to the BSFA Committee who decided that a trial issue should be produced with a view to producing TANGENT two or three times a year. ... This is the trial issue; whether or not it is successful is up to you."
