KSAN 95.5 San Francisco, Radio Broadcast, Complete Concert

Lineage: FM Broadcast > ? > Trade CD-R > Adobe Audition 2 (Hiss Reduction and flac) > HD

"I got this CD-R in a trade. It was labeled as 4-26-73. That may be transposed digits, because on Michael J. Cross' HP (http://michaelcross.me.uk/jc/tp-det2.htm#rp) the date is 1973-06-24. I stick to the latter, because Tom Donahue mentions the concert taking place on a Sunday and June 24 is a Sunday, April 26 not."

Notes:
1.After"Good Evening, this is Tom Donahue, and tonight's hour of music from the Record Plant features a new Bay Area group, Terry & the Pirates with Terry Dolan & John Cipollina. It's all brought to you by the people who make Tandberg tape recorders, & the folks at Pacific Stereo."

8.AfterAnd we thank Terry & The Pirates. You'll find live from Record Plant right here every Sunday night, brought to you by Pacific Stereo. Tonight it was Terry & The Pirates, featuring Terry Dolan & John Cipollina. It was presented by Pacific Stereo and the people who put together Tandberg tape recorders. Tandberg makes equipment for those of you who are really serious about their music. They don't pretend to have a tape recorder in every price range. Instead they concentrate on a few models and build those to very high standards. They make what can only be called state of the art tape recorders, both open reel decks & a really fine cassette machine. Next time you're out visiting and you spot a Tandberg in somebody's house, ask him what he thinks of it, chances are he'll tell you it's the best he's ever owned. The people at Pacific Stereo would like you to come on in and try Tandberg tape recorders because they really deliver value for the money. The whole Tandberg line is at any Pacific Stereo store. And I also want to thank those on the staff of the Record Plant who help make these broadcasts possible: our engineer Tom Fly, John Stronach, Tom Scott, Mike Mckensie, Tom Anderson, Kirk Kinsle, Bob Edwards, Ginger Mews, Michelle Zeron, and West Raymar

- the "unknown source" version had 3 songs as "end of show": "Pigs Boogie", "Rainbow" and "Something to Lose". The "fm" version did not include "Pigs Boogie" but had "Rainbow" and "Something to Lose" at the very beginning.
- When comparing these I realized that "Pig's Boogie" runs without any cut or break into Rainbow, so I think this is actually the first song of this set. I pasted this to the very beginning of the file set.
- both versions sound different, the "fm" source being much brighter - I smoothened "Pigs Boogie" to my best to give it a continuing sound
- band members is best guess (other recording from early 76 show these members)
- recording machine was stopped between several songs
- Inlaws & Outlaws (Set 01) cuts in
- Poetrain: most of song had damaged right channel; fixed by pasting left signal to right channel

Notes:
- Tape flip after "Poetrain" smoothed with a crossfade.
- A number of dropouts have been repaired an artifacts removed.
- I made some azimuth and phases adustments, and a number of level adjustments too.
- You may occasionally hear what sound like clicks but having looked I think that they are probably stray claps.
- There is a small amount of noise at the start of "Poetrain" in the right channel, I think this probably happened during the original transfer from tape, It has been attenuated but I haven't been able to eliminate it.

Thanks to Tom Shyman for extracting the wavs and sending them to me.
Thanks to Joe B. Jones for his help with pitch correction.

A few weeks ago, while digging thru my Cipollina archive when I came across two different versions of Terry & The Pirates Record Plant '73 show. I decided to give both of them a listen again, just to see which was better. One had better sound and more songs, but one was a little more mysterious. At the end of the CD lurked a few tracks that were not from the broadcast. They sounded like a bit of a rehearsal instead. While the Record Plant show has been circulated, this rehearsal never really has. Maybe a few people here and there, but that's it...

The songs mirror what ended up as side 2 of the offical album "Wind Dancer", which was recorded at Different Fur Music in San Francisco, May 1977. While I can't confirm this, I quite sure these rehearsal/run-thru/demos versions are from the same location. Not only the tracks were similar, but so it's instruments and the backing vocals of Pam Tillis.

These will not blow your mind, but they are nice to have. I am sure glad I gave a more in depth listen instead of the CD ended up a coaster, or worse, in a landfill. I hope you enjoy this same addition to your own collection as much as I have!

As always, enjoy! - Tom Shyman (amellowsoul@gmail.com)

Only sounds pretty fair, but prev. uncirculated.
Received in a trade in 2004. Thought lost for many years, but found in storage in early 2013, hiding inside a book!
Many thanks to Fabio N., Steve S. (RIP!), Joe J. and Eric C. for their help on this, all those many years ago.
With big thanks to Dave, I included a small poster of the show. The date and venue are correct, but the lineup listed isn't. Still, it has to be correct.
The recording is 87 min, 30 sec., so if burning to audio, I suggest between 01 - 08 as CD 1 and 09 - 17 for CD 2.
Tracking is left as I received it, and no EQing or editing was used.

Dedicated to the memory of Terry Dolan. I'll miss him every day.

As always, enjoy,
-Tom Shyman (amellowsoul@gmail.com)

Source: Unknown Stereo Soundboard > CDR

Comments:
- The early show had a short jam tacked on the end which I don't think had anything to do with it. It sounds like a soundcheck so I have placed it before.
Notes:
- All tracks pitch corrected
- DC offset removed
- It was necessary to join all the tracks together, after trimming excess material from either end as they as they were seperate tracks on the disc.
- The vocals were quite low on a lot of tracks so I have remixed those to make them more prominent.
- There is a section of about 5 seconds during "Ain't Living Long" where the only thing in the left channel was the drum track, the right channel has been copied over making it mono.

"Yes, Jeff Myers was the drummer. I have a recording of this show that I did and this appears to be much of the last set, minus a new song by Terry called "TD's Natural Blues" between "Inlaws & Outlaws" and "All Worth the Price" and the final sone they did with David singing "Baby Don't Do It." About 18 songs are missing from the full set."

Notes:
- 2 shows? 2 dates? 4 songs appear twice (Sad Eyes, Higher And Higher, Writing You A Letter, Ain't Living Long Like This), they didn't usually repeat songs in multi-set shows. The tracks are consistent, they do seem to be from the same show. There's no chat to indicate a set break,
- Some distortion/diginoise in Ain't Living Long Like This #2
- TD introduces someone else after Jeff Myer in the band intro
- TD says in track 203 "Do you want me to introduce the band again?" but I didn't catch a band intro in any of the earlier tracks, so maybe something is missing?

from kfat.com:
KFAT Radio touched thousands of lives during its 8 years in existence, and a few years ago we invited everyone who participated in the KFAT experience - behind the mic or in front of the radio - to share what KFAT meant to them.
What was KFAT?
KFAT-FM was located in Gilroy, California. It broadcast a quirky mix of country, blues, old-timey music, raunchy comedy, bluegrass, Hawaiian, and whatever struck the fancy of the disc jockey. It was on the air from mid-1975 to Jan. 1983 at 94.5 FM. From high atop Mt. Loma Prieta (site of the famous 1989 earthquake) near San Jose, its signal reached from north of San Francisco to south of Monterey and east to the Sierra Nevada mountains. Some of the original KFAT staff carries on the tradition (updated for the 21st Century) at KPIG in Freedom, Ca. For several years we broadcast old tapes of KFAT on this website. We'll have that back up and running sometime soon. Maybe.

very good to excellent sound quality. The vocals a bit overdriven in the board feed at times and the guitars could be louder but can still be heard. Despite these imperfections I think you'll still find it very listenable overall.

Arthritis Foundation Benefit

Here is a review by an attendee of the 4/3 show at the Stone:
"On this particular night John played in two acts... line up as follows...
Hurricane Sam opened the show and got the place rocking. "Last two songs are about the end of the world" says same... then he plays Rocket Man, and Casey Jones!
Next, Thunder & Lightning (Gravenites/Cipollina Band. They ripped of course!
Then the Headliner "Terry and the Pirates". I just remember everyone yelling for John and Nicky Hopkins (they both played in T&L and T&P) and Terry Hagerty[sic] saying I shoulda known better than to come on after "the Greek" meaning Nick G. then he says "I ain't f*&king with the Greek"...
By the time Terry and the Pirates Came out he'd been outdone by his hired axe... hehehe"

Note: found this in a box of cassettes I forgot about when moving in 1999.
Nice show & recording for this era.
Terry mentions the Stone Club, the benefit show and Easter, so this seems to be correct date & venue

"It's currently unknown who taped this show, but it's accepted that this is from the master tapes. Solid and strong, along with the longest Terry And The Pirates show I have seen. All cuts, dropouts, and the like between the tracks seem to come from the masters. It seems, to me, someone was trying to save tape and/or making sure the flips went well as no music appears to be missing. The fellow did quite all right job if you ask me.

If your burning program will allow you to do up to 79:56, then this show will barely fit on 2 Audio instead of 3. Just please remember that will be for your own version. Circulation of it that way is strongly discouraged.

Huge thanks goes to KevTobin who burned me the audio sometime in early 2003. Without his generosity, drive and spirit, this would have never happened. Hats off to him!!"

Notes:
- This show has been in circulation for a long time. Ray got his copy from a trade in Relix way back.
- Ray's source seems to be the original raw files and it was necessary to make some repairs and cleanup some transitions
- There are two other versions that I know of, neither of which is complete. In fact this copy was missing "Sweet Emotions" and Train Kept A-Rollin'".I have patched them in from the version that was seeded to DIME by propylaen.

Thanks to Ray for providing this source.
Thanks to propylaen for the patch source.

Notes:
- some hiss audible
- before "Silverado Trail" Terry salutes the audience (end of show?); has 2 muffled warps at beginning of song. As he mentions "see you next Tuesday" there might have been another show on July 9th 1985...
- this needed some edit work: most of side B of my cassette just had the right channel, so I pasted.
- DH vocals initially v faint on "I Put A Spell On You"
- "Brown Skin Monkey Bag" is just a snippet; cuts in and off after 20 seconds

Notes:
I did some work on the soundtrack to remove several pops and clicks, adjusted some levels and applied some noise reduction. I also cropped the video to clean up the edges.
* Seeing as how Cipollina is playing a Les Paul for part of this, I'm guessing that this was in the 80's. He was was awarded a Gibson Les Paul 25th Anniversary Guitar from Gibson Guitars which he used a lot in the 80's.
You'll notice that the band are wearing different clothes for the last two songs, so I presume this must be from two different shows.

audience source (2nd gen)

From the Return To Silverado booklet:
"In 1990, Terry pieced together an album entitled "Silverado Trail" taken from various live recordings featuring John Cipollina, Greg Douglass, David Hayes, Nicky Hopkins, Jeff Myer and Greg Elmore. Some of these songs are from one of the last "Pirate" gigs with John on August 26/27, 1988 at Morty's night club in San Francisco."
There are 10 songs in this show that also appear on Return to Silverado, of which only 3 have the same band configuration as this show: Heartbeatin' Away, Follow Her Around, and Mustang Ride.
Comparison:
Track Morty'sRTS
Heartbeatin' Away No whoops etc before verseTD whoops & hollers before verse starts
Follow Her Around JC guitar starts after first verseJC guitar starts before vocals

2nd gen audience recording
cassette trade in the very early 90's

Notes:
Final Terry show from the shoebox.
As far as I know the onliest set the guys did at the Saloon (you can hear the thrown bottle noises in between the songs, this is on a lot of tapes that were recorded there).
This seems to be incomplete as Terry announces another set (Set 4!!) before and after "I Wish I Was Your River".
Unfortunately no Gregg Douglass on this show.
Terry did "Mustang Ride" twice (Set 1 and Set 3).
A nice one anyway...
