Given as 1983-02-11 (also listed at JohnCipollina.com). Barry mentions "... it's Abraham
Lincoln's birthday today.." during Closer (born 1809-02-12) so this might be the correct date.

Comments:
- The tapes for this were dated 2-11-1983 however, during "Closer" Barry mentions that it is Abraham Lincoln's birthday and says "That's why we are here, to help you bring in Abraham Lincoln's birthday". At first I thought that this meant that the show took place on 12th February but I now think that the use of the words "bring in" is referring to the next day being the 12th.
- On a couple of occasions Kathi refers to them as The Dinosaurs, we are not sure why as clearly there is no Robert Hunter present.

Comments:
- The tape for this date was dated April 1, 1983 and labeled ‘Barry Melton Band’ ‘2nd Set’ on Side A and ‘2nd + 3rd Set’ on Side B. The start of Side B with ‘Working For The Ensenada’ (with a ‘this is KSAN San Francisco’ announcement preceding a continuous set of music) appears to be a transition leading into a subsequent set. Accordingly, this has been marked as the beginning of the 3rd set. It is also possible that these are partial sets and other songs may have been played. Opening song The Dance starts abuptly and was faded in.

Comments:
- We are not certain about the set split between I and II as there is nothing to indicate where it was, so this our best guess.
Notes:
- The first 3:57 of Set I had a number of problems in the right channel. Most of these were repaired by copying over the left channel.
- There is a tape flip in "Mean Old World", not too much is missing.

Notes: I kept all the between-song tuning and banter in this upload, and tried to highlight a couple of them. These guys - consummate musicians all - were like the bar band at this place; what a trip it was to go see them there. You can tell, just listening to this particular show - it was always a privilege to see them here with maybe 50 to 75 people squashed into what Nick Gravenites called "the Sweatbox Lounge". Vocals quality is marginal, particularly later in the show.

Apparently (who can remember?) it was one of those rare, warm evenings in San Francisco. Sweatbox indeed! Later, after a change in ownership, this became just "The Saloon".

The second cassette tape has some minor drop-outs here and there, unfortunately.

This recording, together with many others, is legally downloadable in various formats from the John Cipollina section of the Live Music Archive.

I dived deep into my vault for this one as we had some confusion about dates for Fish & Chip 1983-09-20 and this one (30 years ago given to me by a very reliable Cipollina trader from Portland, OR). He sent me 2 tapes labeled "Fish & Chip Saloon, SF 08-20-83". By checking my storage room I found these 2 cassettes a few days ago - here you go with cassette #01 from that trade back then.. According to the setlist all included here is completely new (completely different to what I upped as being 1983-09-20). Cassette #02 is a dupe of what I upped as 1983-09-20 with sides reversed - I think someone mixed up "Side A" and "Side B" of the cassette. To make it more confusing Barry is saying goodbye to the audience after "Mona" which often ends the show.
I decided to upload the "new" part of this show, keeping the given date 1983-08-20 (btw: a saturday) for the records.
- audience chatter audible
- The Dance: tape flip repaired
- Closer: 25 mins! (longest I know of)

- another tape from the mid 80's, traded with MF from Portland, OR (hope you're doin' well my friend..)
- Again cassette sides reversed, now (hopefully!) in correct order.
- tape started with a short clip w/"Fire on the Mountains" theme. I'm pretty much sure this is not the start of the show, so I moved this little piece into a seperate folder
- "Baby Please Don't Go jam" is outstanding!!!

- This was originally a stereo but there were too many problems to make it viable in that form. The right channel has therefore been copied over to the left channel so that it is now mono.

Notes:
- a substantial number of small clicks have been removed.
- several patches of feed back have been attenuated.
- This was originally a mono recording. I tweaked it quite a lot with iZotope and it's turned out much better than I could have hoped for.
- Some tracks start very abruptly, others are slightly clipped at the beginning or end. This is because the video had been edited to cut out some of what went on between songs.

This is a very good show, makes me want to hear the rest of it.

My thanks to Steve and Doug.

Editing notes:
- I amplified the talk tracks and filtered out some of the hiss so it's easier to hear Barry chatting on those. All music tracks were left alone as far as amping and filtering.
- The Dance was split between both discs (faded out at the end of disc one, faded in at the beginning of disc 2). To join the two portions into one track as seamlessly as possible, I had to delete about 1.5 seconds of Spencer's solo, and presumably a second or two were lost in the initial split (maybe for a tape flip), but the final product sounds pretty durn good! The splice is at 8:28, see if you can find it.

Comments: Recorded on my 2nd trip to CA in Jan 1986 this was a great show by the boys!
The year before I met JC at 2 shows (Fish & Chip and Terry & Pirates show) and he was ok with recording both.
This time he even akes if my equipement might be good enough to get a proper sound!
So listen to this, I'm sure you will enjoy the show.
Have fun, m

Video Notes:
- The picture is quite dark until a light was put on around the 15:50 mark so I have lightened it a little.
- Encoded with TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5
- DVD authored with TMPGEnc Authoring Works 5
Audio Notes:
# I split the sources 70/30 across the channels. The left channel is predominantly from the soundtrack and the right from the aud tape. This has the effect of widening the stereo field.
- There are some momentary sound problems with the tape around 1:06 and 17:10.
- It was necessary to patch the soundtrack in several places but only for a few seconds on each occasion.
- Edited with Adobe Aution 1.5 and polished with iZotope Ozone 5 Advanced
Comments:
Flowers were the first Russian band to tour the West after Perestroika. Their leader was Stas Namin. He's quite a character and has an interesting history. See his website http://www.stasnamin.com/index.html.

My thanks to Steve, Doug and the tapers Roger Miller & Bob Leonardis.

Chi Chi Club, San Francisco, CA, October 1, 1988

This came to me as 'Saloon, San Francisco, CA, October 1, 1988', but
the announcer definitely says "Welcome to the Chi Chi Club" in track 1.

Barry says "first day of October 1988" before they start playing, so the date IS correct!

1st gen. analog audience

Notes:
- In set 1, track 3 Barry says that the band are too cheap to hire a support act, and anyway, this way they get the money the support act would have been given
- They intend to play the first set as if they were a bad support act, a country band, so that the audience will be 'blown away' by the second set
- There's some 'taper chat' after a break at the end of the last track

This show was billed as John Cipollina comeback show. John was very ill during this time.
This was one of the last Cipollina shows that I recorded. Sadly, John Cipollina passed away on May 29, 1989. He is sorely missed.

This show, together with many others, is legally downloadable in various formats from the Live Music Archive section of The Internet Archive.

Reviewer: gr8fuldead1969 - February 12, 2020
Subject: Very incomplete
The middle section of show is missing. This is the begging and end of show. This show is plagued with digital-noise and drop outs. Mostly on the middle portion of show. I have 1st gen DATS and the master IS in bad shape unfortunately.
